Securing a European Patent (“EP”) grant from the EPO is a major milestone. However, to ensure that this valuable right extends to Turkey—a key manufacturing hub bridging Europe and Asia and a G20 economy—the patent must be validated nationally.
Turkey is a contracting state to the European Patent Convention (“EPC”). This means that once your European Patent is granted, there is no further technical examination by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (“TURKPATENT”).
By completing a straightforward "Validation" procedure, your patent gains the exact same legal status and protection as a national patent granted directly in Turkey. At Goklu Law & IP Firm, we provide precise, cost-effective, and high-quality validation services for international IP firms and patent owners.

Deadline & Procedure
The validation process is strictly time-bound. Missing the deadline results in the loss of rights in Turkey.
The 3-Month Deadline: The validation application must be filed with TURKPATENT within 3 months from the date on which the mention of the grant is published in the European Patent Bulletin.
Turkish Translation Requirement: Turkey requires the full translation of the patent specification (Description, Claims, Drawings, and Abstract) into Turkish. An inaccurate technical translation can limit the scope of protection or lead to revocation in court. At Goklu Law & IP Firm, we work with specialized patent translators to ensure that the Turkish text mirrors the original EP grant perfectly.
Time Extension: Ideally, the translation should be submitted together with the EP validation application. However, to prevent missing the strict 3-month deadline, it is possible to file the EP validation application with the original EP text (without translation). By paying an additional official fee (surcharge) within this initial period, a 3-month extension is granted specifically for submitting the Turkish translation.
Publication & Certificate: Upon filing, TURKPATENT conducts a formal examination of the submitted translation and the EP patent. If no deficiencies are found, the Patent Registration Certificate is issued and notified to our firm. Subsequently, the validated patent is published in the Official Patent Bulletin. This process typically takes approximately 1 to 2 months.
Required Documents
We maintain a "Zero Formality" policy to make the process effortless for foreign associates. No Power of Attorney is needed.
To initiate the validation process, you are simply required to email us the EP Patent Number (B1). Additionally, as per regulations, please specify the relationship between the applicant and the inventor (e.g., Employment Relationship, Assignment) if they are different. Upon receiving your instruction, we will:
Retrieve the official documents directly from the EPO database,
Obtain a translation fee quote from our specialized patent translation partners,
Inform you with a total fee quote.
Upon receipt of payment, we immediately start the translation process and ensure the validation application is filed strictly before the due date.
Conclusion
Validating your European Patent in Turkey is a strategic necessity to protect your invention in one of the region's largest markets. Don't let your EP rights lapse due to missed deadlines or translation problems.
